Eight Habits of the Heart: Building Strong Communities

In this inspiring program, based off his acclaimed book Eight Habits of the Heart: Embracing the Values that Build Strong Families and Communities, Pulitzer Prize-nominated author Clifton Taulbert shares eight habits that hold the potential to change your community and your life. Strong communities are not accidental, but intentional—an ongoing process of recognizing the value of multi-micro dosages of unselfishness being lived out daily. Where such places exist, the citizens are future focused and children and the elderly are valued. To be a builder of such a place, one has to recognize the value of his or her unselfish actions, and to be a stalwart defender of working together to ensure that a good and strong community exists. According to Clifton, “Communities are the gathering of people, where dreams and ideas are explored and moved forward. Where sharing across ‘back fences’ is commonplace.” The Eight Habits of the Heart are the call to action and the materials (principles) needed to build and maintain a good and strong community.

Outcomes:

  • A genuine recognition that “Others Matter”
  • The embrace of unselfishness as the driving force to ensure a good and strong community
  • The willingness to explore personal actions that need to be STOPPED, STARTED and ACCELERATED to ensure a good and strong community
  • Understanding the VALUE of the continuous building PROCESS
  • Recognizing that building a COMMUNITY is never final, but is an on-going PROCESS

History, the Great Teacher: An Honest Conversation About Race in America

A much needed honest conversation about “Race in America” is brought to life in this presentation that will stir both your heart and your mind. With insights from Clifton’s powerful book, The Invitation, this program calls upon us to “acknowledge the elephant in the room”, for the truths of history to open our eyes and hearts. As our nation continues to grapple with the impact of slavery and race, as we find ourselves in troubling discord, Clifton’s invites us to a history class in which, he says, “We can no longer afford to be tardy or absent”.

In this program, audience members will be challenged to:

  • Understand how Honest Conversations equal Honest Applications
  • Value RAI: Respect, Affirmation & Inclusion
  • View Life through the “Lens” of Others
  • Recognize the Reality that “Closed Eyes” will not “Remove the Elephant from the Room”
  • Discover “New Pathways” beyond the lingering lessons of race and place

The Power of WEI: Welcoming, Engaging, and Including Others

When Others Matter, Lives Change!

Clifton Taulbert artfully crafts a universal conversation with practical outcomes wherever we may find ourselves—within the arenas of where we live, play, study and work. Taulbert draws from his early life experience of growing up on the Mississippi Delta during the era of legal segregation—but also the place where he encountered the Power of WEI, the transforming presence of others who WELCOMED HIM, ENGAGED HIM and INCLUDED HIM. According to Taulbert, “We should never underestimate the impact of our presence upon others.”

In this program, audience members will be challenged to:

  • Embrace WEI as their daily fare
  • Embrace our “Shared Humanity” which leads to Opportunity
  • Realize how “One Person” can Make a Difference

Beyond Silos: Shift Your Thinking, Choose Your Mindset

Although silos are commonplace, they often times become barriers to sustained workplace success.  The “Silo Mentality” becomes a major distraction in workplaces facing constant disruptions, driven by rapidly advancing technology, global competiveness and world uncertainty. In this program, Taulbert challenges his audience to not be fearful of leading and managing beyond the known and expected, and to embrace and employ the future-focused and innovative mindset of the entrepreneur.

Outcomes:

  • Discover the value in building pathways to silos
  • Learn how a “Shift in Thinking” is key to remaining relevant
  • See how a mindset shift can lead to the right strategy

Eight Habits of the Heart for Educators

Today’s educators and students are facing insurmountable odds: funding cuts, overcrowded classrooms, increased bullying, high-stake test requirements. The Educational Landscape is changing at a blistering rate _ almost as fast as knowledge itself is growing. Yet, despite these challenges, we have still have high expectations for education. Education remains foundational to America’s continued success. This workshop and conversation have been designed to bolster the foundation for that continued success—a commitment to the focus on school culture and the type of leadership needed to create and sustain that culture—a culture that emerges from the on-going process of building community within our schools. Through personal narratives and an engaging presentation, the Eight Habits of the Heart presentation, based on Clifton’ book of the same name, provides participants the tools and conversations needed to embrace their personal roles in building a powerful school.

Building an Entrepreneurial Team—Become Their North Star

Today’s business leader wants an Entrepreneurial Team—outside-the-box thinkers, nimble and innovative, who perform their daily tasks with a sense of ownership. This is a much needed approach to marketplace success in today’s highly competitive climate. Oftentimes, the leadership attitudes and behaviors are not readily seen by teams who are looking up for examples, directions and guidance. Leaders must be challenged to first GET OUT OF THEIR BOX—traditional and past performances that have become standard operational procedures, versus innovative and motivational. Today, Leadership must become the guiding “North Star” for their Teams.

In this program, attendees will:

  • Recognizes why being the innovative “example” matters
  • Recognize leadership shortfalls
  • Learn the Flattened Pyramid and what it provides for Creative Partnerships
  • Understand how Innovative Leadership is key to Productive Followership

Black Capitalism in America: Black Wall Street and Beyond

In this conversation, Taulbert discusses that “Shining Moment of Time”, when following the Civil War, black capitalism took off on a journey of self-discovery. Despite the failures encountered by some, many had journeys that resulted in unprecedented success. Highlights include the rise of Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Deep Greenwood, AKA Black Wall Street, which is now recognized as the crown jewel of early 20th century black capitalism. Hear the Untold History and be inspired. From this program, use the lessons of those who moved beyond slavery barriers to imagine the possibilities for changing your own life today.
